The Summarize Within tool is not performing when using the numerical 'Group by Field' value.

Workaround

Use a text field as the 'Group by Field' value in the Summarize Within tool.

1. Create a text field to hold the values/classes:

a. In the Summary_Features layer > Add Field > Type: Text, Name: gridcode_t.

b. Use Field Calculator to copy the gridcode values into gridcode_t.

2.Run the Summarize Within tool using the new grouping field [gridcode_t]:

a. Input Polygons: Original_Polygons_All.

b. Input Summary Features: Summary_Features.

c. Output Feature Class: Summary_07.

d. Summary Fields:

Field = gridcode [values 2,3,4,5 = classes, long integer, Statistics = Sum

e. Check: Add shape summary attributes.

f. Shape Unit: Hectares.

g. Group Field: gridcode_t.

h. Check: Add group percentages

Output Group Table: Summary_tbl_07

To test the outputs are correct, follow the workflow below:

a. Select polygons from the output polygon layer. i.e. Summary_07 to manually check the area calculations [three polygons were selected in this example; Join ID 19, 20, 21].

b. Create a layer for each of these selected polygons in turn, using: right-click Summary_07 > Make Layer from Selected Feature.

c. Clip the Summary_Features layer by each new layer in turn = 3 x Summary Feature layers. [Summary_Features_clip1, Summary_Features_clip2 , Summary_Features_clip3].

d. For each clipped layer: Add New Field [AREA_Calc] > Calculate Geometry for that field in each layer [Area, Hectares].

e. Summarize the AREA_Calc fields in turn, using the gridcode_t field as the Case field.

f. Values matched the output, Summary_tbl_07.
