Bug
The Define Projection tool does not project CAD feature datasets. Although there are instructions on how to project CAD feature datasets within ArcCatalog, there is no link pointing to these instructions from the Define Projection tool site located at http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//001700000077000000.htm. The instructions to project CAD are at this site: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//00100000000z000000.htm. However, the instructions on this site do not state how to project using the define projection tool.

This issue is a duplicate of NIM059769 and is fixed in 10.0 SP1. The Internal PRJ file does not take presidence over the filename.prjWorkaround
Workaround:1) Open new blank map document in ArcMap2) Select the Add Data button in ArcMap3) Navigate to the \ManhattanKS\ManhattanKS.gdb Parcels feature class and select the Add button4) Select the Add Data button in ArcMap again5) Navigate to the \ManhattanKS\MillerRanch\MillerRanch.dwg Polyline feature class and select the Add button6) Click OK on the Unknown Spatial Reference dialog box7) Right-click the Parcels layer in the table of contents > Properties8) Note the Projected Coordinate System is NAD_1983_StatePlane_Kansas_North_FIPS_1501_Feet9) Navigate in Windows Explorer to the location of the Coordinate Systems file (<a href="file:C:/Program" target="_blank">C:\Program</a> Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Coordinate Systems)and select Projected Coordinate Systems > State Plane > NAD 1983 (US Feet) > NAD 1983 StatePlane Kansas North FIPS 1501 (US Feet).prj10) Right-click NAD 1983 StatePlane Kansas North FIPS 1501 (US Feet).prj and select Copy11) Navigate in Windows Explorer to the location the MillerRanch.dwg is located and right-click to Paste the .prj file12) Right-click the .prj and select Rename13) Rename the file, MillerRanch.prj, after the exact upper/ lower case spelling of the .dwg file14) Close the file location and return to ArcMap15) Hold the Shift key while selecting the Polyline and Parcel layers in the table of contents16) Right-click either highlighted layer in the table of contents and select Remove17) Both layers have been removed from the table of contents18) Select the Add Data button in ArcMap19) Navigate to the Parcels feature class and select the Add button20) Select the Add Data button in ArcMap again21) Navigate to the Polyline feature class and select the Add button22) Right click the Polyline layer in the table of contents > Properties > Source tab23) Note the Projected Coordinate System is NAD_1983_StatePlane_Kansas_North_FIPS_1501_FeetSchritte zur Reproduzierung
