Switching options under the Allow NULL column in the ArcMap field design crashes the client when working with a SQL Server geodatabase.

Workaround

Altering a field to be NOT NULL is only applicable if the table is empty (does not contain records). There are several options for avoiding the crash:

  • Drop the table and recreate with the correct field configurations.
  • Dropping the desired column to not allow nulls and recreate the column that way.
  • Use ArcMap 10.8.1 or ArcGIS Pro 3.x. to perform the alter field.
