Storing a local copy for editing in an enterprise geodatabase from an ArcGIS Server feature service fails if the service is opened in ArcMap through the ArcGIS Online 'Open in ArcGIS Desktop' button.

Workaround

Create a user connection to the server in ArcMap, and add the service to the map or store the local copy in a FGDB.
