Workaround

Turn the Windows font smoothing off.Click the start button and select Settings > Control Panel. Double click on Display. On the Display Properties dialog click the Appearance tab. Click the Effects... button. Uncheck the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" check box. Click OK to exit all of the dialogs. Refresh your ArcMap display. Your labels will appear correctly now that the Windows Font Smoothing is turned off.
