Creating a local copy for editing in ArcGIS for Desktop from a feature service item stored in Portal for ArcGIS removes the default value set on the field.

Workaround

1. Create a user connection to ArcGIS for Server from ArcCatalog. 2. Add the feature service from the server connection. 3. Create the local copy for editing.
