laptop and a wrench

Bug

A DBF file with numeric fields with a fixed length of five and no decimals are interpreted by ArcMap as a short integer. This causes all values greater than 32717 to have 65536 subtracted, resulting in an incorrect (and negative) value within the attribute table. However, the correct values are still visible in the DBF file.

Workaround

1. Add a field of type long integer. 2. Sort desired original column in an ascending order. 3. Select all negative values. 4. Calculate the value of the paired new column to be equal to “[original column value] + 65536”. 5. Repeat for all three affected columns. 6. View the DBF portion of the shapefile in Excel to verify the matching of the data between the original and the new columns.
