Answer

What changes were made to Personal and Student Use subscriptions on July 20, 2021?

On July 20, 2021, the following changes were made to Personal and Student Use subscriptions:

  • the default user type is now GIS Professional Advanced
  • users now have access to the following premium apps:
    • ArcGIS Business Analyst Web Standard
    • ArcGIS Planner
    • ArcGIS Insights
    • ArcGIS Urban Suite (includes ArcGIS CityEngine)
  • ArcGIS LocateXT is included as a Pro extension

For Student Use subscriptions only, credit allocations have also increased from 100 credits to 1,000 credits.

How do the changes impact new Personal or Student Use customers?

In addition to the changes listed above, customers who purchase Personal or Student Use subscriptions after the update benefit from improvements to the My Esri licensing instructions.

How do the changes impact existing Personal or Student Use customers?

Though changes were made to existing accounts automatically from July 22 through July 25, 2021, the following steps must be followed to fully convert a subscription and user type.

  1. Sign in to the ArcGIS Online organization.
  2. Navigate to the Organization Overview page.
  3. In the Your subscription has been updated dialog box, click the Update user type button.
The 'Your subscription has been updated' dialog box with the 'Update user type' button in the lower left corner.

Clicking the 'Update user type' button activates updates, bypassing the multiple steps required for a customer to un-assign their user type, reassign a new one, and reassign all ArcGIS Pro extensions.

Note:
If the ArcGIS Pro license has been taken offline, it may not be possible to update the user type. Checking the license back in fixes this.

What happens if a user tries to use ArcGIS Pro without updating their user type in ArcGIS Online?

If a user with a Personal or Student Use subscription tries to use ArcGIS Pro without clicking the 'Update user type' button in ArcGIS Online after their subscription updates, ArcGIS Pro will return the following error or warning message.

The number of licenses assigned to users exceeds the number of licenses available in your organization. Please contact your administrator to reconfigure your organization's licenses.
