PROBLEM

Unable to view hosted feature layer metadata in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise when published from ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: July 19, 2023

Description

In some instances, the layer-level metadata of a hosted feature layer published from ArcGIS Pro does not display, when clicking the Metadata button in the item details page of the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise. The metadata only displays the information specified in the ArcGIS Pro sharing pane when publishing the layer.

Cause

Sharing a feature layer through the Share tab on the ArcGIS Pro ribbon retains the metadata specified while publishing the layer. This sharing method shares the entire map as a web layer, even if there is only one layer.

Solution or Workaround

To retain the layer-level metadata when publishing a single layer, share the layer through the layer sharing option in the Contents pane.

  1. In the Contents pane, right-click the layer, and click Sharing > Share As Web Layer.
  2. The Share As Web Layer pane is populated with the tags, titles, and summaries as in the layer's metadata.
  3. Click Publish to share the layer.

The published feature layer retains the layer-level metadata and can be viewed by clicking the Metadata button in the item details page.

Note:
If multiple layers containing individual layer-level metadata are shared from the Share tab on the ArcGIS Pro ribbon, click the individual layer under Layers in the item details page to view the layer-level metadata.
