HOW TO

Add dynamic images to a map document using simple paths from Data Driven Pages

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

The instructions provided describe how to add dynamic images to a map document through the use of an inserted picture, image paths stored in the attribute table, and Data Driven Pages. This is useful when flipping through multiple locations and providing additional images of each location, such as showing an aerial view of various Major League Baseball stadiums with an image of the playing field below the map (see example below).

Procedure

To add dynamic images to a map document with Data Driven Pages:

  1. Verify the attribute table for the feature class containing the field with the image path.
    Example path: \\Drive\foldername\Picture1.jpg
    • Local File System (LFS)

      Local File System

    • Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) Path

      UNC Image Path system

  2. Configure and enable Data Driven Pages. For more information, refer to ArcMap: Creating Data Driven Pages
  3. Switch to layout view. For more information, refer to ArcMap: Displaying maps in data view and layout view.
  4. Insert an image (Insert > Picture). Browse to the location of the image and select one of the images that is referenced in the feature class attribute table. Click Open.
  5. Right-click the image and click Properties.
  6. On the Picture tab, select “Simple path from Data Driven Pages”, and select the Index layer field from the drop-down arrow that contains the image path. Click Apply > OK.

    Note:
"Simple path from Data Driven Pages" selects a field from the Data Driven Pages index layer containing either a path or URL that references the picture being used for each page.
After setting the properties, the picture switches according to the path set in the attribute table.
