HOW TO

Diagnose the error "Error when trying to administer service"

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

When creating a service in ArcIMS Administrator, the following error message is displayed:

"Error when trying to administer service".

This error can be displayed if ArcIMS cannot verify the data source location of the layers added in the map configuration file.

The following article includes information on how to diagnose and troubleshoot the possible cause.

Procedure

The most commonly used map configuration file types used with ArcIMS are files with the extensions .AXL or .MXD. AXL files are typically created by the ArcIMS Author application, or can be manually created by typing ArcXML code in a text editor. MXD files are generated when creating a map with the ArcGIS ArcMap application.

Select the file type that is being used to create an ArcIMS map service:

· .AXL ArcIMS Author {*r28826*}
· .MXD ArcGIS ArcMap {*r28836*}
