Substitute one value for another within a field

Summary

You can use the Substitute request to substitute one value for another within a field in a table.

Procedure

  1. Open the table.
  2. Select Start Editing from the Table menu.
  3. Select the field heading of the field that you want to work with.
  4. Select Calculate from the Field menu.
  5. Double-click the field name to be worked with from the Fields list.
  6. Set the Type to String.
  7. Scroll down the Requests list and double-click Substitute.
  8. Type between the parenthesis the value to be substituted for and the value to be substituted; each value should be enclosed in quotation marks.
    For example:
    Code:
    [State_name].Substitute("California","CA")
  9. Click OK.
  10. Select Stop Editing from the Table menu and Save your Edits.
