HOW TO

Install ArcGIS Server 9.3.1.x on RHEL 5

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to install ArcGIS Server Java 9.3.1.x on Redhat Enterprise Linux 5

The latest version of following three 32-bit packages must be installed:

- compat-libstdc++-33
- libXp
- compat-libf2c

Note:
Users can check for these packages with rpm -qa --qf '%{N}-%{V}-%{R}.%{arch}\n' | grep <rpm_name>, where <rpm_name> is one of the packages listed previously. 32-bit libraries will have i386 at the end.

Note:
ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1 must be applied immediately after either type of installation.

This is a special install script to help users who wish to migrate to the RHEL 5 operating system, which is supported with the ArcGIS 9.3 products at Service Pack 1 (SP1).

With this script, users can either install ArcGIS 9.3 Products directly onto RHEL 5 and then apply ArcGIS 9.3 SP1, or upgrade from RHEL 4 to RHEL 5 (with ArcGIS 9.3 products previously installed) and then apply ArcGIS 9.3 SP1.

Procedure

Steps for a New Installation on RHEL 5

The ArcGIS 9.3 RHEL 5 Support Script installs any Linux ArcGIS 9.3 product, performing additional setup steps for ArcGIS Engine Runtime, ArcReader, ArcGIS Server, and ArcIMS. All other ArcGIS 9.3 products install without modification.

The script does not generate any additional installer output in the terminal window, with two exceptions:

1. ArcIMS 9.3 on RHEL 5 requires the root password to create a link in /usr/X11R6/bin.

2. If an error occurs that causes the script to exit, a log file containing variable values and status messages is created in the /tmp/ directory (/tmp/93rh5_support.log.PID). When the script finishes, this log file is moved to <install_dir>/.Setup/<product_name>_93rh5_support.log.

To use the script:

1. Verify that the system meets the system requirements, including the additional packages listed above.

2. Download and untar 93rh5_support.tar.

3a. For ArcGIS Engine Runtime, ArcReader, ArcIMS, or an ArcGIS Server GUI install, run 93rh5_support/93rh5_support.sh /full/path/to/CD_ROOT, where CD_ROOT is the mount point of the 9.3 product media or the CD_Linux/ directory for ArcReader.

3b. For an ArcGIS Server silent install, run 93rh5_support/93rh5_support.sh –s /full/path/to/SILENT_SERVER_PROP_FILE /full/path/to/CD_ROOT, where SILENT_SERVER_PROP_FILE is a customized copy of the sample properties file from the ArcGIS Server 9.3 media. The –s option tells it to run silently and that the next path is the properties file and not CD_ROOT.

Note:
This install must be immediately followed with the installation of Service Pack 1 for all ArcGIS 9.3 products.

Steps for an upgrade from RHEL 4 (with existing ArcGIS 9.3 products installed) to RHEL 5

It has been determined that upgrading from RHEL 4 to RHEL 5 with ArcGIS 9.3 installed breaks the following 9.3 products: ArcGIS Engine Runtime, ArcReader, ArcGIS Server, or ArcIMS.

The ArcGIS 9.3 RHEL 5 Support Script should be used to fix these products after upgrading to RHEL 5. Essentially, this script runs the new system requirements check and makes some modifications based on the upgraded RHEL 5 system.

To use the script:

1. Verify that the system meets the system requirements, including the additional packages listed above.

2. With the ArcGIS 9.3 products already installed, upgrade the operating system to RHEL 5.

3. Download and untar 93rh5_support.tar.

4. Run 93rh5_support/93rh5_support.sh –u <install_dir>.

Note:
This install must be immediately followed with the installation of Service Pack 1 for all ArcGIS 9.3 products.
