HOW TO

Install ArcGIS Server distributed setup on Linux/Solaris

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to install the ArcGIS Server Object Manager (SOM) and ArcGIS Server Object Container (SOC) on a distributed setup for better performance and scalability.

If there is more than one SOC machine, configure them using the same procedure described for machine2 in this document.

For Distributed Installs of ArcGIS Server 9.3, refer to the ArcGIS Web Help: ArcGIS Server Java Web Help.

Procedure

  1. Install the SOM component on machine1 as user1/passwd1. Run ArcGIS Server setup, select Custom Install, and install the SOM component on machine1 as user1/passwd1.
  2. Add user1 to the userlist on machine1. In ArcGIS Server manager on machine1, http://<machine1>:8099, navigate to 'GIS Server' > 'Users' and add user1/passwd1 to the user list.
  3. Install the SOC component on machine2 as user2/passwd2. Run ArcGIS Server setup, select Custom Install, and install the SOC component on machine2 as user2/passwd2. During the setup, the install queries for the name of the SOM machine that this SOC machine works with. Provide machine1 as the SOM machine.
  4. Add user2 to the userlist on machine1. In ArcGIS Server manager on machine1, http://<machine1>:8099, navigate to 'GIS Server' > 'Users' and add user2/passwd2 to the user list.

  5. Add machine2 to SOC machine list on machine1. In ArcGIS Server manager on machine1, http://<machine1>:8099, navigate to 'GIS server' > 'Host Machines (SOC)' and add machine2 to the machine list.

    Note:
Add user1 and user2 to the user list before adding machine2 to the SOC machine list.

  6. Configure log, cache, output, and jobs directories on machine1.

The default log folder on machine1 is located at ArcGIS Server Install Location>/arcgis/server/user/log. It must be accessible by user2 on machine2.

Change the log folder in ArcGIS Server Manager by navigating to GIS Server > log files > Log File Properties.

Navigate to GIS Server > Server Directories to add cache, output, and jobs directory. For detailed information about how to add Server directories, see the ArcGIS Server Manager help content on 'Creating a server directory (Manager)'.

On Linux/Solaris, the default directory of each type is created if both SOM and SOC components are installled. The default location is <ArcGIS Server Installation Directory>/arcgis/server/serverdir.

    Note:
For the SOM only install, arcgisoutput, arcgiscache, and arcgisjobs directories can be created under <ArcGIS Server Installation Directory>/arcgis/server/serverdir on machine1. Add these folders to the virtual directory through the ArcGIS Server Manager. For assistance on creating these directories, refer to Web Help: Create Server Directories.

    Note:
The virtual directories must be accessible by user2 from machine2.

  7. Restart ArcGIS Server on machine2.
  8. Restart ArcGIS Server on machine1.

    Note:
The data and resources used in creating services must to be accessible by user2 on machine2.
