HOW TO

Use Universal Naming Convention (UNC) pathnames in an ArcIMS ArcMap ImageService

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to reference data with Universal Naming Convention (UNC) pathnames when creating an ArcMap MXD document. This enables an ArcMap ImageService to access data on different network drives using UNC pathnames.

Procedure

An example is given below that demonstrates how to reference the ‘auswwf’ Shapefile, from ESRI sample data, using UNC pathnames to create an MXD document.

  1. Ensure that the ArcIMS User Account has permissions to access the UNC path.
  2. Open ArcCatalog.
  3. Click Connect to Folder and browse to the default path of the ESRI sample data on the network drive that you want to connect to. For example:
    \\network computername\<ArcIMS Installation Directory>\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\Samples\Tutorial Data.
  4. Open ArcMap.
  5. Click Add Data and add the ‘auswwf’ shapefile from the UNC mapped network drive.
  6. Save this MXD document as Test.mxd.
  7. In ArcMap, right-click the 'auswwf' data layer > Properties > Source tab and notice that the Data Source is referred to by the UNC pathname \\network computername\directory path, rather than by drive <Drive Name>:\directory. In this example, the UNC pathname points to \\network computername\<ArcIMS Installation Directory>\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\Samples\Tutorial Data.
  8. Create an ArcMap ImageService using Test.mxd.
