Introduction

ESRI® announces the ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 Map Document Performance Patch. This Patch solves a performance issue that occurs when opening a map document from a location on the network rather than the local machine. It deals specifically with the issues listed below under Issues Addressed with this Patch.

We recommend that all ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 who utilize map documents stored on networked drives, download and install this Patch at their earliest convenience to ensure the highest quality experience when working with ArcGIS Desktop 9.0.

Issues Addressed with this Patch

CQ00271561 - Read-only map documents open faster than read-write documents when opening over a network.

The main issue is:


• Map Documents with full read-write permissions opened over a network drive open slower than read-only documents. This issue is the result of the connection to the map document over the network being left open longer than necessary, resulting in excess network traffic that leads to a performance slowdown..
  
  This patch resolves the performance issue by closing the connection to map document when it is not longer needed thereby reducing the unnecessary network traffic.

Installing the Patch

ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 Service Pack 3 must be installed before you can install this Patch.

1. Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS Desktop installation location, and that no one is using ArcGIS Desktop.



2. Download ArcGIS-90-MapDocPerf-Patch.exe to a location other than your ArcGIS Desktop installation location.
   
   
3. Double-click the setup file to start the install process.



4. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.

NOTE: If you have installed client setups from a shared Network Administrative ArcGIS Desktop setup, this Patch must be applied to all client installations.

How to identify which Patch is installed

To check for the presence of a Patch, for each file examine the unique identification information provided (right click, properties, version tab, item name, QFE Version).
