Is it possible to publish standalone tables to ArcGIS Online?

Answer

Yes, it is possible to publish a map containing only a standalone table to ArcGIS Online. Depending on users' data, the table can either be a spatial or non-spatial table. A non-spatial table does not contain attributes that can be mapped. When a standalone table is published to ArcGIS Online, the resulting item is a hosted table.

ArcGIS Online only supports editing pre-existing records from a standalone table. It is not possible to add and delete records in the map viewer or when using the Edit widget in Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS.

From ArcGIS Desktop 10.4 onwards, standalone tables located in a geodatabase can be published directly to ArcGIS Online by adding the table to the Table Of Contents in ArcMap and sharing the table as a service from File > Share As > Service. Before sharing the standalone table as a service, make sure to sign in to ArcGIS Online via the File > Sign In option.

In ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 and older versions, the Share As > Service option is inactivated (grayed out) because publishing a standalone table is not supported. This is a known limitation. As a workaround, add an empty feature class (or shapefile) to the Table Of Contents, along with the standalone table, and uncheck the feature class. This allows the table to be published with the feature class as a single feature service. When published to ArcGIS Online, add the standalone table without the feature class in the map viewer to view the records.

Alternatively, the standalone table can also be opened in ArcGIS Online without using the publishing method. To do so:
  1. Close all ArcGIS programs and zip the geodatabase that contains the table.
  2. Upload the zipped geodatabase file to ArcGIS Online as an item in My Content.
