Frequently asked question

Is cartographic representation supported in ArcGIS Pro?

Last Published: March 25, 2024

Answer

ArcGIS Pro does not fully support cartographic representation. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Tools that are not available in ArcGIS Pro for more information. Cartographic representations can be viewed in ArcGIS Pro when an MXD file is imported to ArcGIS Pro using the Import Map button on the Insert tab. However, because cartography tools are not available in ArcGIS Pro, it is not possible to edit the representations symbology in the imported MXD file. Representation rules are not obeyed in ArcGIS Pro as they are in ArcMap due to this limitation. Refer to the image below.

Note:
Do not add a feature class with cartographic representation directly from a geodatabase to ArcGIS Pro as the representations do not display. Save the feature class with representations as an MXD file, and import the map document to ArcGIS Pro.

As a workaround, users can convert the representations' symbology to unique values symbology to edit the layer's symbology or use the control points to migrate the representations from ArcMap to features in ArcGIS Pro.

  • In ArcGIS Pro, to edit the layer's symbology, convert the representations' symbology to unique values symbology. This converts all representation rules and field overrides associated with the representation to layer symbology. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Representations in ArcGIS Pro for instructions.
  • In ArcGIS Pro, edit the control points of features to migrate the cartographic representations from ArcMap to the ArcGIS Pro features. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Edit control points for instructions.
