Cause

This issue occurs when 3D symbols are used in the map, and is related to a known limitation when ArcMap uses the Microsoft Windows graphic device interface (GDI) during the conversion of certain elements such as 3D symbols.

Solution or Workaround

It is suggested to use 2D symbols instead of 3D symbols, or to remove the 3D symbols from the map. To do so, select and right-click the the layer containing the 3D symbols > Properties > Symbology > select 2D symbol instead of 3D. For more information, refer to ArcGIS Help: Fundamentals of 3D symbols and styles.

Another alternative workaround is to use the MXD Doctor utility. The MXD Doctor utility can analyze and recover corrupted MXD files. For more information on how to use the MXD Doctor utility, refer to the following document, ArcGIS Help: Using the MXD Doctor utility.
