Frequently asked question

Is it possible to open tile packages in ArcGIS Pro?

Last Published: December 8, 2023

Answer

Starting with ArcGIS Pro 2.1, it is possible to add or open tile packages directly to a map in ArcGIS Pro. Tile packages can be added to a map by dragging the package from a personal folder and dropping it onto the map, or using the Add Data button. Within the Add Data option, select Data to browse to the data or Data From Path to specify the path of the tile package stored in the personal folder. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene for steps to add the data, including tile packages, to a map in ArcGIS Pro.

The Add Data button in ArcGIS Pro.

However, in previous releases of ArcGIS Pro (such as ArcGIS Pro version 1.4), tile packages could not be opened directly, or be added to an ArcGIS Pro project either by using the Add Data button or by dragging the package from personal folders and dropping it in the project. Tile packages can be used as inputs or outputs to ArcGIS Pro operations or geoprocessing tools. So, extract the tile package first using the Extract Package (Data Management) tool in ArcGIS Pro. The extracted package results in a raster or a layer file that can be opened and displayed in ArcGIS Pro.
