HOW TO

Add a custom address locator style to the list of available styles

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Summary

Adding a custom address locator style is not an out-of-the-box functionality in ArcMap; however, it is possible to create a custom address locator style. The instructions provided describe how to add a custom address locator style to the list of available styles in ArcMap.

Procedure

To add the custom address locator style to ArcMap, follow the steps below:
  1. Copy and Paste the custom address locator style XML files to the following path, C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.x\Locators.
    Note:
If ArcMap is not installed in the default C:\, navigate to the appropriate installed path of ArcMap to find the locators folder.
  2. Start ArcMap.
    Note:
Do not restart ArcMap if it is already running when copying and pasting the custom address locator style XML files to the Locators folder.
  3. In the Catalog window, browse for the Create Address Locator tool from the Geocoding Tools toolbox. For more information, refer to Creating an address locator.
  4. Double-click the Create Address Locator tool.
  5. In the Create Address Locator dialog box, click the Browse button Browser button next to the Address Locator Style text box.
  6. When the Select Address Locator Style dialog box opens, verify that the custom address locator style is available.
    Note:
The custom address locator style may not appear in the style list if the file name ends with '.loc'. This indicates it is a locator, not a style. Rename the file name to end with '.lot' instead for it to appear as a style.
