ArcGIS applications with 10.2.1 Utilities and Telecom Update Patch 4 crash when connecting to geodatabases with raster data

Description

Using ArcGIS 10.2.1 Utilities and Telecom Update Patch 4 (UTU4), ArcCatalog and ArcMap crash without producing a crash dump. These crashes can be encountered when refreshing folders and/or connections, disconnecting from a database, or adding data from workspaces that contain rasters, mosaic datasets or raster catalogs.

Cause

Esri Development is currently investigating the listed issues and is working to ensure it is addressed in ArcGIS 10.2.1 Utilities and Telecom Update Patch 5.
