How To: Create an ArcMap 10.3 startup log

Summary

These instructions describe how to create a startup log for ArcMap version 10.3

Procedure

 

Note:
Prior to running the following commands. The user running the commands must have full permission to the folder where ArcMap.exe is installed. The default location for ArcMap 10.3 is used in this example.

For other versions of ArcMap, the path may vary, for example, at version 10.2, this path is:
 <install location>\ArcGIS\Desktop10.2\bin
C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.3\bin

Please see your administrator for assistance with this.
  1. Navigate to Start > Run, type cmd, and click OK.
  2. Change the directory to <arcgis_install>\bin, and press Enter.
     
    Note:
    If ArcGIS Desktop 10.3 was not installed to the default location, change directory to this location. 
    Type the following path and press Enter:
    cd C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.3\bin

  3. Type the following command and press Enter:
     
    arcmap.exe /log

  4. To view the log file, type the following command and press Enter:
     
    notepad arcmap.log

    The following is an example of an ArcMap startup log file:

Note:
If the log does not write or ArcMap does not launch, it is most likely because the user does not have full permission to this folder. Please see an administrator for assistance with this.
