Problem: ArcMap crashes when editing shapefiles and feature classes with Mapping and Charting Solutions installed

Description

When editing shapefiles or geodatabase feature classes, ArcMap may crash without any error message if any component of Mapping and Charting Solutions, an ArcGIS extension, is installed.

Cause

The CATID folder is created on the computer by ArcGIS for Desktop if any plugins or applications are installed for ArcGIS for Desktop. These may be generated by third-party plugins, or by Esri extensions. The CATID folder contains files with the ECFG extension, which initialize the application or extension when ArcMap is started.

The ECFG file named {89f00DB0-3173-4786-A3E7-55D6034CC99E}_symbolizerepslib.ecfg in the CATID folder may cause this crashing situation.

Solution or Workaround

Use one of the following solutions to resolve this issue:

  • Install the latest Mapping and Charting Solutions patch for the Extension component and version that is installed. These are available for download at the Patches and Service Packs for Esri Production Mapping web page.
  • Remove the file {89f00DB0-3173-4786-A3E7-55D6034CC99E}_symbolizerepslib.ecfgfrom the following folder, and paste in the Configuration folder one level above:

For ArcGIS for Desktop versions 10.2.2 and prior:

    ▪ 32-bit:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.x\Configuration\CATID

    ▪ 64-bit:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.x\Configuration\CATID

For ArcGIS for Desktop versions 10.3 and 10.3.1:

    ▪ 32-bit:
    C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.3\bin\Configuration\CATID

    ▪ 64-bit:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.3\bin\Configuration\CATID

  • Rename the CATID folder, for example to CATID_OLD, to hide customizations from ArcMap and keep any extensions from being initialized when ArcMap is started.
  • Uninstall the current version of ArcGIS for Desktop and reinstall a fresh updated version of ArcGIS for Desktop, along with the correct version of the Mapping and Charting Solutions extension.
