HOW TO

Deploy ArcPad to a mobile device when errors arise using Deployment Manager

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Certain circumstances prevent deploying ArcPad to a mobile device through the Deployment Manager. These could include intermittent connectivity to the device, or errors with Windows Mobile Device Manager. Under some circumstances an error is returned, however this is not always the case.

Instructions provided describe the steps to deploy ArcPAD to the device in these situations.

Procedure

Windows cabinet (.CAB) files are provided with the desktop installation of ArcPad in the following locations:

C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\ArcPad10.0\10.2
C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\ArcPad10.0\10.2\Sqlce\WinCE5_ PocketPC

These files can be deployed to a mobile device manually through a device connection or through the ArcPad tools for ArcToolbox.

  1. Ensure that either Windows Mobile Device Manager (Win 7, 8) or Microsoft Active Sync (Win XP) is installed on the desktop machine. In addition, ArcPad must be installed on the desktop client.
  2. Navigate to the following folders on the desktop client and copy these folders to the mobile device:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\ArcPad10.0\10.2
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\ArcPad10.0\10.2\Sqlce\WinCE5_PocketPC

An alternative would be to use the 'Deploy to Mobile Device' geoprocessing tool if ArcMap is also installed on the client.
  3. Navigate to the .CAB files on the mobile device. The ArcPad Application.ARM.CAB is the initial ArcPad .CAB installation file and the sample data, HARN tables, and VBScript .CAB files are all present in this folder location. Click these .CAB files to initiate installation. Also ensure that the SQL compact .CAB has been installed.
