How To: Update Business Analyst .mxd files created in earlier versions to use in Business Analyst version 9.3.1

Summary

It is necessary to update Business Analyst .mxd files created in earlier versions to use in Business Analyst version 9.3.1.
Instructions provided describe how to update Business Analyst .mxd files created in earlier versions of Business Analyst so they work in Business Analyst version 9.3.1.

Procedure

This procedure refreshes all map data such as shopping centers, businesses, and thematic layers such as block points and state areas.

Warning:
Before proceeding, make a backup copy of any .mxd files to be updated. Save any custom labeling or symbology associated with Business Analyst data layers to apply them to the new group layer if needed.

  1. Launch Business Analyst and open a blank .mxd file.
  2. Right-click on Business Reference Layers and select 'Save as Layer File'. Save the layer to the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Business Analyst\Data folder using the default layer name.
  3. Right-click on Map Layers and select 'Save as Layer File'. Save the layer to the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Business Analyst\Data folder using the default layer name.
  4. Close Business Analyst. Do not save changes.
  5. Open an earlier version .mxd file to update.
  6. In the TOC, move any custom layers (i.e., stores, customers and trade areas) above the map layer 'Business Analyst Detailed Map' (or in some cases 'Business Analyst Map'). Either of these names may exist, depending on if the detailed or non-detailed map was used to create the original .mxd. Make sure that custom layers are above the standard Business Analyst thematic layers (licensed data layers) such as shopping centers, ZIP codes, etc.
  7. Right-click the map layer 'Business Analyst Detailed Map' (or 'Business Analyst Map') and select Remove.
  8. Click Add Data. In the Add Data window, open the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Business Analyst\Data folder and select both Business Reference Layers and Map Layers, then click 'Add'.
  9. Click File > Save.
