How To: Link attributes from the input point feature class to the resulting polygons from a Network Analyst Service Area Solve

Summary

A common work flow when using the Network Analyst Service Area solver is to use the load locations function to load a point feature class or point shapefile for the solve. Often these point feature classes contain attributes that are required in the resulting feature class as well.

There is not a direct way to maintain all of the fields from the original input feature class or shapefile. However, the fields can be joined to the resulting output feature class.

Procedure

By setting the 'Name' field to a unique identifier in the Load Locations dialog box, there will be the opportunity to join the resulting feature class to the original input feature class table.

If there is no unique identifier, ObjectID can be used.

Use the following procedure to join the resulting feature class to the original input feature class attributes.

  1. Follow the article below to create the Service Area solver and adjust the analysis settings.

  2. In the Network Analyst window, right-click Facilities and click Load Locations. Select the point feature class to load in the drop-down. Under Location Analysis Properties, select the field containing the unique identifying attributes. Click OK. Solve.
  3. In the Network Analyst window under the solver in use, right click 'Polygons' or 'Lines' and click Export Data. Save the export as a feature class or a shapefile. Add the feature class to the map document when prompted.
  4. In the Table of Contents, right-click the original input feature class and click Open Attribute Table.
  5. In the Attribute table, click Options then Export. Add the table back into the map document.

    Note:
    If the unique identifier used in the locations is the ObjectID, a shapefile table must be saved as a DBF, and a feature class must be saved in a geodatabase.

  6. In the Table of Contents, right-click the feature class exported from the solve, click Joins and Relates, and click Join.
  7. In the Join dialog box, set the field for Part 1 to the unique identifier join field. Set the table in Part 2 to the DBF or feature class table exported in Step 5. Set the field in Part 3 to the corresponding unique identifier join field. Click OK.
  8. In the Table of Contents, right-click the feature class, or shapefile, in the Table of Contents, click Export and click Export Data. Save the export to a new feature class or shapefile.
