The following error may be returned when updating a large number of versioned objects in ArcGIS if the user's schema does not have the necessary ArcSDE log file tables and the user does not have privileges to create the log file tables:
"Move: An unexpected failure occurred.
Unable to create system logfile tables. User perhaps lacks permissions or resources to create tables."
Additionally, the ArcSDE gsrvr process crashes, therefore preventing the ArcGIS session from performing any additional operations.
When performing a versioned update on a large set of objects, the ArcSDE process must use the connected schema's log file tables or a log from the pool of ArcSDE log files to log the row_id value of the objects being updated.
In ArcGIS 9.3 and 9.3.1, if no ArcSDE log file tables are present, the ArcSDE gsrvr process fails. In 9.3.1 SP2 and later releases, the user just receives the error message.
To avoid the error (and prevent an ArcSDE 9.3 or 9.3.1 gsrvr crash), create the necessary ArcSDE log file tables in the schema prior to performing the operation, or use a pool of ArcSDE log files.
Gsrvr crash was fixed in ArcSDE 9.3.1 SP2.
