FAQ: What directories should be backed up for ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework?

Question

What directories should be backed up for ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework?

Answer

To back up ArcGIS Server resources or move ArcGIS Server to a new location, the following directories are essential for ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework.

The service definition files are stored in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\server\user\cfg, by default. This folder should be backed up to preserve individual service properties.

The server definition file is stored in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\server\system as Server.dat. This file should be backed up to preserve the ArcGIS Server properties.

The instance directory and Web mapping applications are stored, by default, in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. Back ups should be performed on individual Web mapping applications, as well as the Instance directory (ArcGIS by default).

Maps, data, and other resources should also be backed up.

Finally, caches should be backed up, since they are time consuming to create. Refer to the ESRI Knowledge Base article about tools for moving a cache between machines effectively in the Related Information section below.
