How To: Update the Schematic dataset configuration and fix the Schematic diagrams after dropping and recreating a geometric network


Instructions provided describe how to update the Schematic dataset configuration and fix the Schematic diagrams after dropping and recreating a geometric network. Schematic datasets and diagrams that are based on data from a geometric network rely on the information in that network. Schematics keep track of feature class ids and feature object ids. When a geometric network is dropped and recreated, this causes problems for Schematics because the feature class id and feature object ids for the network junctions feature class change. The dataset and diagrams must be updated with the new information before everything will work correctly. Prior to ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 Service Pack 4, there was not a way to fix this issue.

If feature classes other than just the network junctions have had name changes or object id changes, there is not a way to completely clean this up and there could be problems with the layouts of existing diagrams.


To fix the problem, the Schematic dataset needs to be modified with the new feature class information and all the diagrams need to be updated to pick up the new feature object ids.

  1. Use ArcCatalog to browse to the Schematic dataset. Right-click the dataset and select Edit Project... from the menu.
  2. Once the Schematic Designer application opens, expand the Element Types tree view entry to expose all the element types.
  3. Find the element type that corresponds to the network junctions feature class and select this entry in the tree view.
  4. On the right side of the screen, click in the text field for the Associated Feature Class/Table. This exposes an ellipse button (...) at the end of the row. Click on this button to open the Associate Feature Class/Table dialog box.
  5. In the drop-down menu for Data Source, select (or re-select) the appropriate data source (this is often times named 'CURRENTDS'). Even if the correct source shows, it still needs to be re-selected.
  6. Use the Name drop-down menu to select the name of the net junctions feature class, and click OK.
  7. Click the Save button on the main Schematic Designer window and exit out of the Schematic Designer application. The configuration has now been updated.
  8. To complete this process, the diagrams need to be updated. This can either be left alone and done one by one as they are needed, or it can be done all at once. For ArcGIS Desktop 9.2, the only choice is to update the diagrams one by one. To do this, open the diagrams in ArcMap and select the Update command from the Schematic toolbar. For ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 and above, run the new Update Diagrams geoprocessing tool to automatically update all the diagrams.
