How To: Encrypt the password when using a direct connection to ArcSDE geodatabase using ArcIMS Author

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to encrypt the password when using a direct connection to ArcSDE geodatabase using ArcIMS Author.

Procedure

  1. In ArcIMS Author, make a traditional three-tier connection. Add a layer from ArcSDE geodatabase, and save the .axl file.
  2. Edit the .axl file as follows; for example:

    If the original SDEWORKSPACE tag is as follows,

    <SDEWORKSPACE name="sde_ws-0" server="csc-lab2" instance="port:6161" database="" user="sde" encrypted="true" password="EPYCJM" geoindexdir="C:\DOCUME~1\davi5675\LOCALS~1\Temp\" />,

    edit this tag, changing only the instance as shown below. In the following example, the LOCAL variable is used because of Windows OS.

    <SDEWORKSPACE name="sde_ws-0" server="csc-lab2" instance="sde:oracle10g:/;LOCAL=ora10g" database="" user="sde" encrypted="true" password="EPYCJM" geoindexdir="C:\DOCUME~1\davi5675\LOCALS~1\Temp\" />

    In a Linux environment, the two_task variable can be used to achieve this; for example:

    <SDEWORKSPACE name="sde_ws-0" server="csc-lab2"
    instance="sde:oracle10g:/;TWO_TASK= gisdev” database="" user="sde_remote"
    encrypted="true" password="IKWZUEGIIRUMHCQZWZENWBKZ" geoindexdir="/tmp" />

    Do not change the password; leave it encrypted as the ArcIMS Author generated it.
