Why does the ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop Help Search Engine no longer work?

Answer

The ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 Help uses a third party search engine called AnswerWorks. Microsoft released a security update to Internet Explorer on December 11th, 2007 (click here for more information). After the Internet Explorer security update has been installed, it renders the AnswerWorks search engine used by the ArcGIS Desktop Help unusable.
