PROBLEM

Uninstalling ESRI fonts on Windows CE computers prior to uninstalling ArcPad

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

In ESRI's .pdf "ArcGIS ® 9 Installing ArcPad® 7.0.1", users are instructed to uninstall fonts on Windows CE computers, as follows:

"There are issues with uninstalling fonts on Windows CE computers. Consequently, uninstalling ArcPad 7.0.1 on Windows CE requires a two-pass uninstall.

Before uninstalling ArcPad ..., you must remove the ESRI font files manually by using Windows Explorer on your desktop PC to navigate to the \Windows\Fonts folder on your connected Windows CE computer, and then use the standard file delete method in Windows Explorer to remove the esri_11s.ttf, esri_30s.ttf, esri_49s.ttf, and esri_144s.ttf font files."

In uninstalling ArcPad 7.0.0, some users may be unsuccessful in "... [using] the standard file delete method in Windows Explorer to remove the esri_11s.ttf, esri_30s.ttf, esri_49s.ttf, and esri_144s.ttf font files."

Cause

Although a user may correctly follow the instructions and access the Windows CE computer's Windows > Fonts folder from the PC, the user may still receive an error message on the PC that the fonts cannot be deleted, because the fonts are in use on the connected CE computer.

Solution or Workaround

To solve this problem, use the following procedure:

  1. From the PC, navigate by way of ActiveSync to the CE computer's Windows folder and open it.
  2. In the CE computer's Windows folder, locate the Fonts folder, and change the name of the fonts folder, for example to 'XFonts'.
  3. Shut down the CE computer.
  4. Restart the CE computer.
  5. Navigate again from the PC by way of ActiveSync to the CE computer's Windows folder and open it. There is a new 'Fonts' folder and it is empty. The old, renamed folder, 'XFonts', is still there and still contains the fonts.
  6. Delete the old, renamed folder, 'XFont', which still contains the fonts.
  7. Proceed with uninstalling ArcPad from the Windows CE computer as instructed.
