PROBLEM

Internet Explorer 6 crashes when using the Java ADF

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When Web Graphics are used for a prolonged period in Java ADF, Internet Explorer 6 crashes. This problem occurs:

-in a custom Web application that adds items to the WebGraphics layer;
-in the Web Mapping Application generated by ArcGIS Server Manager when complex results are drawn on the graphics layer and the drawing operations are repeated.

Cause

The ArcGIS Server Java ADF draws features on the WebGraphics layer in Internet Explorer using a technology called Vector Markup Language (VML). There is a memory leak in the VML implementation that eventually causes Internet Explorer 6 to crash.

Solution or Workaround

  • Use Internet Explorer 7.
  • Update Internet Explorer 6 with a hotfix available from Microsoft. See the link in the related information for details about applying the hotfix.
