Various dialogs boxes show up as boxes and squares instead of displaying the correct text

Description

When working in ArcGIS Desktop, various dialog boxes and taskbars display in place of the expected text.

Cause

This is a Microsoft issue that typically occurs if Mfc40loc.dll is installed on the system.

Solution or Workaround

1. Right-click on Start and select Search. Click All Files Or Folders.
2. In the Search box, type 'Mfc40loc.dll' without the quotes. In the Look in box, click to select the hard drive where Windows is installed, then Click Find Now.
3. Click to select the Mfc40loc.dll file in the Results pane. Right-click on the Mfc40loc.dll and select Rename. Rename the file to Mfc40loc.old.
   
   

   Note:
   If Mfc40loc.dll is not on the hard drive, try searching for the file named mfc42loc.dll and repeat the above steps.
