Text in ArcMap exported to AI, EPS or PDF files displays incorrectly

This article pertains to ArcGIS retired versions 8.x, 9.x, and 10.0 only. Later versions of ArcGIS may contain different functionality, as well as different names and locations for menus, commands and geoprocessing tools.

Text in ArcMap exported to AI, EPS or PDF files displays incorrectly. For example, the font displays in 1pt-size in Adobe Illustrator CS, CS2 and CS3.

Cause

This is a known problem. Adobe has completely replaced the text engine in Illustrator CS, CS2 and CS3.

Solution or Workaround

1. Open the AI, EPS or PDF-exported map in Illustrator.
2. Select everything on the map.
3. Press the up arrow on the keyboard once. The text displays in the correct size.

4. Press the down arrow on the keyboard once to reposition the entire map to its original location.
