How To: Create a thematic map

Summary

A thematic map conveys information about a single topic or theme such as population by census tract or sales revenue by ZIP code. Instructions provided describe how to create thematic maps with Map Image Web Service.

Note:
See ArcWeb Developer's Guide for descriptions of the objects and methods mentioned in this article.

Procedure

  • Use the method getESRIThematicMap to create a thematic map based on variables supplied by ESRI, such as population that correspond with certain geographic features, such as counties or ZIP codes.

With this method, the user also defines the classification scheme. The object, ThematicOptions, contains information on how the thematic classifications should be broken up. The object, ThematicColors, specifies what colors to use for each classification. ArcWeb retrieves the variables from the fields specificed in the method input getESRIThematicMap.thematicField.
  • Use the method getCustomThematicMap to create a thematic map based on variables that the user supplies, such as sales revenue that correspond with certain geographic features, such as counties or ZIP codes.

With this method, the user also defines the classification scheme. The object, ThematicData, should consist of the geographic features’ FIPS codes and the associated thematic values supplied by the user, such as sales revenue. The object, ThematicOptions, contains information on how the thematic classifications should be broken up. The object, ThematicColors, specifies what colors to use for each classification.
  • Use the method getValueMap to create a value map that renders certain geographic features, such as counties or ZIP codes with specific colors. The object, ThematicData, should consist of the geographic feature’s FIPS code and a lookup value for each feature that the user would like rendered. The method input, getValueMap.colorCodeValues, contains the lookup value specified in the object ThematicData, as well as, the color value for each lookup value's feature.
