How To: Test ArcIMS 9.x to ensure map services can be created with sample data

Summary

The document contains information on how to test the ArcIMS Spatial Server to ensure it is working correctly, and is able to create simple map services using sample data.

Procedure

Follow the platform specific procedure for creating ImageServices and ArcMap Services.

  • Windows
    1. Download the Windows Sample Data and Map Configuration Files (AXL and MXD) from the following location: Download samplewin.zip
    2. Extract sample files.
      1. Navigate to the temporary location where samplewin.zip was downloaded.
      2. Use WinZip to extract the contents to the root of C:
    3. Create an ImageService from a sample *.AXL file.
      1. Navigate to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcIMS > Administrator and start the ArcIMS Administrator.
      2. Click on Services
      3. Click on the button to create a new service
      4. Fill in the information as listed below:
        Name: testaxl
        Map File: c:\test_win.axl
        Virtual Server: ImageServer
        Image Type: JPEG
        Directory Location: C:/ArcIMS/Output
        HTTP Location (URL): http://<your_machinename>/output
      5. Click Ok
      6. Confirm that the service is running.
    4. Create an ArcMap Service from a sample *.MXD file.
      1. Navigate to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcIMS > Administrator and start the ArcIMS Administrator.
      2. Click on Services
      3. Click on the button to create a new service
      4. Fill in the information as listed below:
        Name: testmxd
        Map File: c:\test_9_win.mxd
        Virtual Server: ImageServerArcMap1
        Image Type: JPEG
        Directory Location: C:/ArcIMS/Output
        HTTP Location (URL): http://<your_machinename>/output
      5. Click Ok
      6. Confirm that the service is running.
  • UNIX
    1. Download the UNIX Sample Data and Map Configuration Files (AXL and MXD) from the followng location: Download sampleunix.tar
    2. Extract sample files.
      1. Navigate to the root tmp directory.
        cd /tmp
      2. Copy sampleunix.tar that was downloaded to a temporary location.
        cp <temp location of file>/sampleunix.tar sampleunix.tar
      3. Extract the contents of the file.
        tar -xvf sampleunix.tar
    3. Create an ImageService from a sample *.AXL file.
      1. Launch ArcIMS Administrator by navigating to: $AIMSHOME/bin and typing:
        ./aimsadmin
      2. Click on Services
      3. Click on the button to create a new service
      4. Fill in the information as listed below:
        Name: testaxl
        Map File: /tmp/test_unix.axl
        Virtual Server: ImageServer
        Image Type: JPEG
        Directory Location: $HOME/arcgis/Output
        HTTP Location (URL): http://<your_machinename>/output
      5. Click Ok
      6. Confirm that the service is running.
    4. For version 9.0.1 and above, create an ArcMap Service from a sample *.MXD file.
      1. Launch ArcIMS Administrator by navigating to: $AIMSHOME/bin and typing:
        ./aimsadmin
      2. Click on Services
      3. Click on the button to create a new service
      4. Fill in the information as listed below:
        Name: testmxd
        Map File: /tmp/test_9_unix.mxd
        Virtual Server: ImageServerArcMap1
        Image Type: JPEG
        Directory Location: $HOME/arcgis/Output
        HTTP Location (URL): http://<your_machinename>/output
      5. Click OK.
      6. Confirm that the service is running.
      Warning:
      If any of the above tests fail to create a map service, please note the exact error code and message, and gather any additional information from the ArcIMS Message Console (Help > Administrator Message Console).
