Frequently asked question

Are raster datasets with non-square cells supported?

Last Published: March 16, 2021

Answer

Note:
This article pertains to ArcGIS versions 8.x and 9.x only. Later versions of ArcGIS may contain different functionality, as well as different names and locations for menus, commands and geoprocessing tools.

ArcGIS is able to read and display raster datasets with non-square cells. This includes the ESRI GRID format as well.

In most cases, ArcGIS prevents ESRI GRIDs from having non-square cells by default. For example, the Spatial Analyst extension is based on square cell analysis. This means all output data created from Spatial Analyst have cells that are resampled to square cells.

Note:
For input raster data in formats that support non-square cells, the raster is converted to square cells before the operation is performed.
