How To: Create a geodatabase raster catalog pre-ArcGIS Desktop 9.2

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to create a raster catalog in a geodatabase. At ArcGIS Desktop 9.0, rasters are fully supported in the geodatabase environment, both Personal Geodatabases and Enterprise (ArcSDE) Geodatabases.

Procedure

Follow the steps below to create a raster catalog in a geodatabase.

  1. Right-click on the geodatabase and select New > Raster Catalog.
  2. In the Create Raster Catalog dialog box, verify the Output Location is set.
  3. Type a name for the raster catalog in Input Raster Catalog Name.
  4. For 'Coordinate system for the raster', click on the properties icon and select the coordinate system for the raster column.
  5. Click OK on the Spatial Reference Properties dialog box.
  6. For 'Coordinate system for the geometry column', click on the Properties icon.
  7. In the Spatial Reference Properties on the Coordinate System tab, select the coordinate system for the geometry column.
  8. Select the XY Domain tab.
  9. Enter the Min X, Min Y, Max X and Max Y coordinates of all rasters that fit into the catalog.

    Warning:
Failure to enter the XY Domain values for the rasters causes the catalog to not draw properly, or not at all.

  10. Click OK on the Spatial Reference Properties dialog box.
  11. Verify Managed is selected as the Raster Management Type.

    Note:
This option is only valid for Personal Geodatabases. ArcSDE Geodatabases are always Managed.

  12. Right-click on the new raster catalog, select Load > Load Data. The Raster to Geodatabase dialog box appears.
  13. Select all of the input rasters and set the desired parameters; check Help for description of each. Click OK.
