Opening a MXD stored on a UNC-pathed network share generates errors in ArcMap

Description

ArcMap may quit or crash with a "referenced memory" or "ArcMap.exe has generated errors" message when accessing a MXD file stored on a UNC-pathed network share.

Cause

This problem can occur when double-clicking on a MXD from a shared folder on a server that is accessed via UNC paths.

Solution or Workaround

Instead of accessing the network share by UNC paths, map a drive to the location.
