ArcMap crashes when attempting to convert labels to annotation

ArcMap may crash when converting labels from label classes symbolized with label marker symbols to annotation. This occurs with annotation in the map or in a geodatabase.

Cause

This is a known issue.

Workaround

If the Service Pack 2 is unavailable, work around this issue by creating the labels without the marker symbols and convert them to annotation. The annotation can then be edited to apply the marker symbols as needed.
