FAQ: What is the difference between an ArcSDE-maintained row ID column and a user-maintained row ID column?

Question

What is the difference between an ArcSDE-maintained row ID column and a user-maintained row ID column?

Answer

ArcSDE registered row IDs are unique integer columns that are used to uniquely identify rows in tables and feature classes. Either type can be used by ArcSDE to perform queries.

The main difference between the two is the responsibility for populating this column. ArcSDE provides values for ArcSDE-maintained row ID columns.

User-maintained row ID columns are usually specified for tables and views that are registered for ArcSDE and will not be edited using ArcSDE clients.

When a table or view is registered with the geodatabase or is versioned, an ArcSDE-maintained row ID is required.
