Common Windows tasks when installing ArcIMS

Summary

This document provides step-by-step instructions for Windows operations required in the installation of ArcIMS.

Procedure

Follow each of the steps below. Where the instructions are system-specific, follow the instructions that apply to your platform.

  1. Open a Command Prompt.
    1. Click the Start button
    2. Select Run.
    3. Type: cmd
  2. Open the Services Panel.
    • Windows NT: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Services
    • Windows 2000/2003: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
    • Windows XP: Click Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services
  3. Set the System Environment Variables.
    1. Navigate to Environment Variables dialog.
      • Windows NT: Right-click My Computer > Properties > Environment tab
      • Windows 2000/2003: Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Environment Variables
      • Windows XP: Choose Start > My Computer > Systems Task > View System Information > Advanced tab > Environment Variables
    2. To create a new System variable in the System Variable window (not User variable window),
      • Windows NT: click in the Variable/Value field then click Set.
      • Windows 2000, XP, 2003: click New.
    3. To edit an existing System Variable in the System Variable window (not User variable window),
      • Windows NT: click in the Variable/Value field then click Set.
      • Windows 2000, XP, 2003: click Edit, then click OK to set the variable
  4. Navigate to Add/Remove Programs.
    • On Windows NT, 2000, 2003: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
    • On Windows XP: Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  5. Open the Internet Services Manager.
    • On Windows NT: Click Start > WinNT 4.0 Option Pack > Microsoft Internet Information Server > Internet Service Manager.
    • On Windows 2000/2003: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Services Manager.
    • On Windows XP: Click Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services.
  6. Stop and Start ArcIMS services.
    1. Open the Services window.
    2. To stop the ArcIMS services, select the ArcIMS service in the list and click Stop in the toolbar.
      Warning:
      Always stop the services in the following order, to avoid possible corruption of the configuration files:
      
      1. ArcIMS Tasker
      2. ArcIMS Monitor
      3. ArcIMS Application Server
    3. To start the ArcIMS services, select the ArcIMS service in the list and click the Start in the toolbar.

      1. ArcIMS Application Server
      2. ArcIMS Monitor
      3. ArcIMS Tasker
  7. Change the Properties of a Windows Service.
    1. Open the Services window (outlined in this document)
    2. Select the service properties
      • On Windows NT: Click a service
      • On Windows 2000/XP/2003: Right-click the service to be changed and select Properties.
        1. To Disable a service,
          • On Windows NT: Select Startup and click on the Disabled radio button
          • On Windows 2000/XP/2003: Select Disabled option for the Startup Type field under the General tab
        2. To alter the log on properties of a service,
          • On Windows NT: Select Startup and alter Log on options in the Service window
          • On Windows 2000/XP/2003: Select the Log On tab and alter user names and passwords accordingly
    3. Click OK when all changes have been made
  8. Ping the Server or Local Machine.
    1. Open a command prompt (outlined in this document)
    2. Type: ping <myservername>
      Note:
      Type in the webserver address or machine name in place of <myservername>.
  9. Save a file with its extension.
    1. In the Save or Save As window, type the file name and extension within quotes in the File name field. For example, worker.properties.
    2. Select All Files for the Save as type field
    3. Click Save.
  10. Check the File/Folder Permissions.
    1. Right-click the file or folder to be checked.
    2. Select Properties.
    3. Select the Security tab.
      • On Windows NT: Click the Permissions button.
      • On Windows 2000/XP/2003: Select from the list of Group or User names and view the associated permissions in the Permissions window below.
  11. Determine what Version of J2SDK (JDK) is installed.
    1. Open a command prompt (outlined in this document).
    2. Type: java -version
  12. Create a Virtual Directory for IIS on Windows 2000, XP, 2003.
    1. Open Internet Information Services Manager.
    2. Right-click Default website (or the associated website hosting ArcIMS).
    3. Select, New > Virtual Directory.
