Copy Failed. File sharing lock count exceeded. Increase MaxLocksPerFile registry entry

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Error Message

When pasting a feature class from a Geodatabase to a Personal Geodatabase in ArcCatalog, the following error message is returned:

"Copy Failed. File sharing lock count exceeded. Increase MaxLocksPerFile registry entry."

Cause

The file sharing lock count has been exceeded.

Solution or Workaround

Increase the MaxLocksPerFile value. The ArcMap Advanced Settings utility (..\ArcGIS\Utilities) allows the safe modification of registry settings used by ArcGIS.

  1. Run the Advanced Settings executable.
    [O-Image] Example
  2. Click the Editor tab.
  3. Update the 'Jet Engine max # of records to calculate' value. This value can be any number larger than the number of records in the current dataset. For example, if the dataset has 250,000 records, set the value to 300,000.

    Note:
This step requires ADMINISTRATIVE access permissions.

  4. Close the ArcMap Advanced Settings window.
  5. Paste the feature class again.
