Associate Virtual Servers with new Spatial Servers: an ArcMap Server example

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided are for ArcIMS 4.0 users only. Users with ArcIMS 4.0.1 should refer to the ArcIMS help topic "Managing Virtual Servers" for information.

Virtual Servers must be associated with one or more Spatial Servers. You can optimize the resources of your site by reconfiguring your Virtual Servers to use selected Spatial Servers and setting the number of instances available for each Virtual Server/Spatial Server association.

Procedure

In this example, the site begins with 4 Spatial Servers and 3 active Virtual Servers: ImageServer1, FeatureServer1, and ImageServerArcMap1, all running on a computer named 'webmaps'.

The goal is to associate ImageServer1 and FeatureServer1 to 2 Spatial Servers with 2 instances set for each server and to associate ImageServerArcMap1 to the 2 remaining Spatial Servers with a single instance set for each of these servers.

  1. In ArcIMS Administrator, click Servers to open the Servers window, select the ImageServerArcMap1 Virtual Server, and click the Properties button.
    [O-Image] NewServers4
  2. Check the box to the left of the second Server and change the Instances for each of the selected servers to 1. It is necessary to hit Enter after each change.

In this example, webmaps_1 was already associated with ImageServerArcMap1, an association with webmaps_2 was added, and the Instances were changed to 1 for each of the servers.
  3. Click OK to close the Virtual Server Properties window.

The next step is to disassociate the FeatureServer1 and ImageServer1 Virtual Servers from the webmaps_1 and webmaps_2 Spatial Servers and associate them with webmaps_3 and webmaps_4 instead.
  4. Select the FeatureServer1 Virtual Server and click the Properties button.
  5. Disassociate it from the webmaps_1 server by unchecking the box to the left of the Server. Check each of the boxes for webmaps_3 and webmaps_4 but leave the 2 Instances unchanged.

  6. Click OK to close the Virtual Server Properties window.
  7. Repeat Steps 4 through 6 for the ImageServer1 Virtual Server.
  8. Save the site configuration.
  9. Stop and restart the ArcIMS services.

    Summary:
There is a specific sequence to follow when stopping and restarting the ArcIMS services (Windows) or processes (UNIX).

    Procedure:

Stop them in the following order:
    A) ArcIMS Tasker
    B) ArcIMS Monitor
    C) ArcIMS Application Server

Start them in the opposite order you stopped them:
    A) ArcIMS Application Server
    B) ArcIMS Monitor
    C) ArcIMS Tasker

For further information about the stop and start of ArcIMS services on Windows or Linux operating systems, see the articles listed in Related Information below.
