PROBLEM

ESRI Transportation fonts cannot be embedded because of licensing restrictions

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When exporting layouts to the WMF image format, the fonts cannot be viewed on a machine that does not have the ESRI fonts installed. To get around this problem the image is usually inserted into a Power Point slide, Word document, or an Adobe document to save the image and embed the fonts.

However, when saving the document and embedding the fonts in the WMF image that contains the highway shield symbols the application used to create the document may return the following error:

"ESRI Transportation fonts cannot be embedded because of licensing restrictions."

Cause

The highway shield symbols come from the Transportation and Municipal font (esri_6.ttf), which cannot be embedded due to a limitation with the font.

Solution or Workaround

Remove the reference to the Transportation and Municipal font in the project file and replace it with the Transportation and Civic font, which is embeddable and contains the identical symbols as the Transportation and Municipal font.
  1. Open the .apr file in a text editor.
  2. Use the editor's Find and Replace option to find Municipal and replace it with Civic.
  3. Save the edits.
  4. Open the .apr file in ArcView.
