Error Message

Adding a geocoded point theme created with StreetMap 2000 results in the following error:

"Shapefile has error. Unable to open."

After clicking the Batch Match button, ArcView processes the information, but the new theme is not displayed in the Table of Contents. The new theme is still saved to the hard drive. The AV_Status field of the new theme reports that addresses are unmatched, and no features exist. The addresses can still be found using the Locate Address button.

Cause

The ArcView HOME environment variable is set to a directory that is not 8.3 compliant.

For a file or path name to be 8.3 compliant, the prefix portion of the name must not be longer than 8 characters. The suffix portion of the name must be 3 characters long exactly. Additionally, the path or file name must not contain special characters, such as, spaces, #, $, and so forth.

Solution or Workaround

Set the ArcView HOME environment variable to an 8.3 compliant directory.
