The streetmap extension could not be activated

Error Message

This error occurs when creating a geocoding service based on StreetMap reference data:

"The system is having a problem opening the reference data you chose. The streetmap extension could not be activated."

Cause

In order to create a geocoding service based on StreetMap reference data, the StreetMap USA extension must be activated in ArcCatalog.

Solution or Workaround

1. Start ArcCatalog.
2. Select Extensions from the Tools menu.
3. Check the box for the StreetMap USA extension.
4. Click Close.
