ArcToolbox Warning: Feature class does not contain valid fields or feature table may be in use

Error Message

Some tools don't function properly if the input data is at the root of a drive (C:\myCov or D:\myShape.shp). The Define Mapping option is not permitted. This warning occurs:

Feature class does not contain valid fields or feature table may be in use.

Cause

This is a known issue.

Solution or Workaround

• Copy the data into a folder (C:\Data\myCov or C:\Data\myShape.shp). Use the tool or wizard on this copy of the data, then copy the data back to the root of the drive.
• Move the data permanently into a folder (C:\Data\myCov or C:\Data\myShape.shp).
